Now Malaysia is trying to upgrade a hodgepodge of gritty industrial towns and rural villages with Iskandar Malaysia, a planned eco-city and trading zone with districts for tourism, health care and education.
Part of the development is EduCity, a 240-hectare, or 600-acre, plot of land in Nusajaya, which is being developed by Iskandar Investment Berhad. This company is majority-owned by investment entities linked to the federal and state authorities. Iskandar Investment hopes that Nusajaya’s lush green fields, neatly paved roads and two theme parks will eventually become a second home to more than 16,000 students.

The promenade had concrete embankments that slanted down into the water, revealing sandy beaches during low tide. Peddlers sold steamboat snacks along this popular stretch that faced the Straits of Johor. A jogging track along the promenade led to a park with lush Casuarina trees.
In March 1997, the park was upgraded to include a boardwalk that meandered through a nearby mangrove swamp. A tennis court complex within the vicinity housed the Johor Tennis Association.
A seafood restaurant next to it was the original premises for Restoran Singgah Selalu, which is now a popular 24-hour eatery.

SINGAPORE, Dec 14 — Singapore’s Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Trade and Industry and Ministry of National Development, Lee Yi Shyan, has described Iskandar Malaysia as a region of innovation and entrepreneurship.
He said the Iskandar region has attracted greater interest recently. It has been reported that many foreign investors, including some Singapore firms, were considering investments there, he said.
“Indeed, Iskandar’s advantages are aplenty — its proximity to Singapore, availability of land and a large pool of labour are among the chief reasons for foreign firms to locate there.

The city welcomed 2,100 delegates to the 8th World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) which was held from Dec 4 to 6.
It was a major world class event, and the organiser put in a lot of effort to make it a success. The delegates, who were treated to dinner in Kota Iskandar, were impressed by this “Putrajaya of Johor”.
Kuala Lumpur, with its numerous world-class convention centres, has been the host city for many international events. Singapore has also been a popular choice.
In the past, Johor Baru was unlikely to be the choice of organisers of global events.
So when it became known, early this year, that JB would be the venue to hold the WIEF, some were in a state of disbelief while other were overjoyed.

TAN Sri Lim Kang Hoo was beaming with excitement to show off his grand plan for the makeover of Johor Baru when StarBizWeek met him for an interview recently.
He had just got the plans approved for the makeover of the central business district (CBD) and the eastern side of the tip of Johor Baru (JB). The makeover of the CDB will change the face of several streets such as Jalan Wong Ah Fook, Jalan Segget, Jalan Ibrahim, and Jalan Meldrum which now house buildings that have been abandoned for a long time.
In his opinion, and that of others, JB has not recovered from the property glut after the 1997 Asian economic crisis.
